Every year on April 20th, people around the world celebrate 420 Day. What started in California has grown into a global phenomenon.

And in Canada with legal cannabis, 420 Day has become a national celebration. There are plenty of ways to enjoy this day in Canada – especially in Toronto.

From fun events to popular cannabis products, read on to see how you can make the most of 420 Day.

The history and significance of 420 Day

The origins of 420 Day go back to a group of high school friends from California, known as “the Waldos.” In 1971, they’d meet at 4:20 PM to search for an abandoned cannabis crop. While they never found the plants, their meetups became associated with cannabis use.

The term “420” spread through their connection to the Grateful Dead, eventually becoming a code word between fans of the band for smoking weed. In the 1990s, a flyer at a Grateful Dead concert invited people to gather on April 20th at 4:20 PM to smoke weed together.

That event transformed 420 into an unofficial holiday.

Today, 420 Day is celebrated worldwide with festivals, concerts, and even special events at dispensaries. Many people use this day to raise awareness about legalization and social justice issues.

420 Day in Canada: A legal celebration

Canada made history on October 17, 2018, when it became the second country in the world to legalize recreational cannabis. The Cannabis Act allows adults to legally buy, possess, and consume cannabis products.

Under the new laws, Canadians aged 18 or older (19 in Ontario) can legally possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis in public. And you can grow up to four cannabis plants per household for personal use. These changes have had a big impact on how Canadians celebrate 420 Day.

Before legalization, 420 Day celebrations in Canada were often associated with civil disobedience and calls for cannabis reform. Now, the day has transformed into a more mainstream event. Dispensaries across the country offer promotions on April 20th.

Legalization has also changed the atmosphere of 420 gatherings in public. These events still happen, but with a more festive and less rebellious tone now.

Consume responsibly

While 420 Day is a time to enjoy and celebrate cannabis, it's important to do it safely. Here are some guidelines to help you have a fun and responsible experience.

  • Start low, go slow: If you’re trying a new product, start with a small amount and wait to feel the effects before using more. It can take time to kick in.
  • Know your limits: Pay attention to how cannabis affects you. Don’t feel pressured to consume more than you’re comfortable with.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well: Drinking water and having snacks on hand can help keep you feeling your best.
  • Check THC levels: Cannabis products have different levels of THC. Higher THC content often means stronger effects.
  • Mind the edibles: Edibles can be tricky since their effects take longer to kick in compared to smoking. Wait an hour before deciding if you need more.
  • Designate a driver: Cannabis can impair your ability to drive. If you're out and about, make sure you have a sober driver, or use public transportation to get around safely.
